The oldest of the textile arts, sewing began in the Paleolithic era. First sewing animal hides together, and using needles made from ivory and bone, people across Europe and Asia have sewn clothing to stay warm and protect themselves from the elements. Hand sewing was the only method until the sewing machine was invented in the 19th century, but even after the rise of industrialization hand sewing is still used as a method for textile artists around the world.
